Years 3 and 4

Rainforest Explorers class.

Mrs McHaffie is our teacher.

Mrs Chapman and Miss Wakeham are our teaching assistants.

In Lower Key Stage 2, children build on the foundations from Key Stage 1 and develop greater independence, resilience and curiosity in their learning.

Our curriculum follows the National Curriculum and is designed to be engaging, challenging and inclusive for both Year 3 and Year 4 pupils.

Our PE days are Wednesday and Friday.

Reading at home:

Children in years 3 and 4 will continue to develop their reading as this opens up so many opportunities for learning and for pleasure.  Please support your child in their reading by listening to them and by reading to them at least 4 times per week. Discussing the text is very important to build their understanding.

Reading is one of the most important skills children develop at this stage. In lower Key Stage 2, children move from learning to read to reading to learn. Your support at home makes a huge difference.

Book discussions at home:

Instead of just asking “Did you like it?”, try:

  • Retrieval
  • What happened at the beginning?

  • Who are the main characters?

  • Vocabulary

  • What does this word mean?

  • Can you think of a synonym?

  • Inference

  • Why did the character act that way?

  • How do you think they are feeling? Why?

  • Prediction

  • What do you think will happen next?

All children have an individual login for Times Tables Rock Stars and are expected to practise regularly. Developing rapid recall of multiplication facts is essential for building fluency and confidence in Key Stage 2 mathematics.

In Year 3, children will learn the 3, 4 and 8 times tables, alongside consolidating the 2, 5 and 10 times tables taught in Key Stage 1.

In Year 4, children are required to know all multiplication facts up to 12 × 12 in preparation for the statutory Multiplication Tables Check and to support wider mathematical learning.
